The novel Of Mice and Men of John Steinbeck has two main-characters:
Lennie and George. The story is about these two persons, who try to find work
during the depressions in the 1930’s. Both men are dreaming of saving enough
money to buy their own ranch one day.
George is a little person with a big brain, driven by a love for his friend Lennie.Lennie, a huge man with
a disturbed brain who is addicted to soft furry things, is George’s partner.
We don’t really get to know how George looks, but we can imagine that he isn’t very tall or muscular.
Even though he isn’t big, he compensates it with his big brain.Lennie is on the other hand, a very big and muscular
man with some really big biceps. Lennie might be very big, but he certainly isn’t smart. His brain is compared with a
childrens brain, so you can’t say that he is very bright. The contrast between the smart and little George and the big and dumb Lennie isn’t done by a coincidence,
it has a reason. Lennies enormous size contra George’s makes their friendship unique and entirely complete.
This is namely a novel where friendships play a big part.
Like I mentioned earlier, Lennie is the person with the twisted mind, and he can not really control his big muscles.
An example of his twisted mind is his passion for soft furry, things, like hair for example. The combination of uncontrollable
muscles and his passion for soft things turns out very bad. He tried to rape a woman in Soledad because of his ‘‘passion’’,
and because of this, he and his friend are fugitives.
He also kills a girl in the novel when he his cuddling with her hair, and when the situation turns violently,
he unfortunately kills the girl. n the book we get an impression that Lennie is a bit sad. He is sometimes very quiet and
this may have something to do with the fact that he is aware of his retarded brain. He never comes up with very smart ideas,
and is a man with few words.
George protects his friend Lennie at all costs because he is his best friend. Even though Lennie is George’s best friend,
he feels tempted to walk away from him when Lennie does something bad, but his lifelong friendship stops him.In the end,
George does something breathtaking: when George finds out that Lennie has killed a girl, he meets him, pulls a gun at Lennies
head and pulls the trigger. This stunning event in the books shows that George thinks Lennie is better dead at the moment,
something that indicates that he is maybe tired of him.
George is unlike Lennie, the man who handles the most of the talking in this novel.
He supplies them both with food and shelter, and of course a job.So you might say that George is the
leader of these two persons. And again, it is the contrast between these two guys that makes their friendship very unique
and special. This makes it a bit interesting for the reader.
